Recently, Mitsui Chemicals has partnered with Formosa Plastics to promote the commercial operation of carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene unidirectional sheets and strips. The company is named Tafnex. Among them, Formosa Plastics provides Mitsui Chemicals with carbon fibers treated with special sizing agents for processing into unidirectional sheet and strip products.

Although the industry generally believes that combining expensive carbon fiber with relatively low-cost PP resin to form composite materials is not a suitable approach, Mitsui Chemicals believes that by purchasing carbon fiber produced in Taiwan at relatively low prices, quality and cost can be balanced and balanced.

Mitsui Chemicals believes that components formed by injection molding and bonding with glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composite materials can provide the required strength for automotive lift doors. In addition, Mitsui Chemicals has developed a unique fiber winding process that uses aluminum cores to manufacture polypropylene composite pipes, which can not only be used as automotive crossbeams but also integrate various polypropylene composite sub components. And these sub components naturally adhere to the pipeline through attachment molding.

To promote the industrial application of this technology, Mitsui Chemicals has set up a production line in Nagoya, Japan, which is planned to start operation in April 2019, and a second production line is also under consideration. According to reports, Japanese car manufacturers are not keen on widely using carbon fiber reinforced polypropylene composite materials due to flame retardant issues, while the situation in Europe is vastly different as there are more OEM manufacturers producing in small batches. Mitsui Chemicals plans to expand into the European automotive market by leveraging the design company ARRK Corp, which was acquired last year.

Meanwhile, Mitsui Chemicals also stated that European sports car manufacturers have shown strong interest in this. In another project related to carbon fiber in Japan, Toyo Oriental Molding (located in Saitama Prefecture) has developed a production technology of carbon fiber polypropylene composite, which uses low viscosity polyurethane lotion to prevent fiber fracture.

These new technologies will enable carbon fiber polypropylene composites to better compete with thermosetting composites. According to Mitsui Chemicals, carbon fiber polypropylene composite inserts can be combined with glass fiber polypropylene composite lift doors to provide customers with a cost-effective solution.
